BUSY BUSY BUSY
December 6, 2009
WOW, have been very busy lately. at first, it was preparing my portfolio for my CA, then it was internship and the notebook design. now it’s the internship, notebook design and ZingO poster, ZO card, and ticket design. really really busy. tight deadlines everywhere, but looking forward to seeing the product of my hardwork. looks like uploading oneworlday project would be impossible now. my doodles are also not coming in.
typography is really wonderful and interesting. it’s amazing how a type can speak so many things to you. for me, if the project requires copy, i would usually go type-browsing for inspiration before i start on my projects. starting to really enjoy type! it is something every aspiring designer should explore!
WONDERFUL THREE YEARS
November 27, 2009
today is a day in my life that i want to always remember, so despite fatigue taking over me, imma blog!
today i had the last lesson of my poly life. last interesting and not so normal lesson. dining etiquette at spgg with the whole cohort. it was a lot of photo taking, smiling and everything nice.
it’s amazing how 3 years have just flown past. i would say it has been the most wonderful three schooling years of my life.
it was a great deal of work but also a hell lot of fun. the friends, the lecturers, the projects, the sleepovers, the goofing around, everything. it was all great.
the friends were simply great, never want to grow out of being how we are all like now.
the lecturers were simply great, doris, kwa, ms lum, dioni, ms low, trudy, rajan, mr sng, mr loh, ms dawn, everyone of them will be dearly missed. i have learnt a lot from all of them and appreciate every single one of them.
there are lots of feelings and thoughts inside of me that can never be described in words. on graduation day, i think i wont be able to hold back my tears.
MONEY MAKES THE VIRTUAL WORLD GO ROUND AND ROUND
November 14, 2009

Before this week’s lesson, i have little knowledge about Habbo Hotel. I didn’t know that there isn’t any audio in Habbo Hotel and that users communicate purely by typing text.
In Habbo Hotel, users own their own rooms at no cost. However, rooms need to be decorated with furniture, so users have to purchase this furniture with real currency. and after decorating your room, you just walk around the “hotel” to “party” and socialize. Why do i say “party”, simply because you are not literally partying, but your avatar is. Everything in Habbo Hotel is communicated via text, so if you were in a party and want to dance, all you can do is type the words dance. Your avatar doesn’t dance at all.
After hearing that, i felt that it kind of didn’t make sense. but apparently, this makes total sense because the makers of the game have gotten a huge number of people addicted to it. And because there are so many people playing the game, the makers are earning a lot from the users who purchase furniture.
Can you see how technology is being commercialized here? This isn’t just happening o Habbo Hotel. This is happening to second life too. Product and brand placement can be seen everywhere in the games. Not only are the makers of these games commercializing their creation, the users are also reaping benefits from it. Users make use of their own expertise in the area and the opportunity made available to make money. like the example cited by my classmates, a user of Second Life created items that enable other users to engage in sexual activities. These items were sold for real money.
Commercializing technology creates competition and ultimately increases the standard of technology. However, i feel that users should be ethical and not exploit the opportunities that technology has created for them. Soon, more and more people will hop onto the technology-train-to-making-money and we, users will be overwhelmed by their money-making-technology

NO MORE PRIVACY?
November 8, 2009
You think touch screen cameras are cool? You think iPhones are cool? You think flat screen TV is cool? None of that is cool. I’m into the third week of nct lectures and tutorials and I realized that what I thought was cool technology was too un-cool because there are more REALLY COOL technology out there. Like for example, the thing that Tom Cruise played with in the movie minority report, we already have something like that. And that is way too cool to be true. Last week’s tutorial, we talked about augmented reality, interactive TV, the new mobile2.0. I was made dumbfounded by the advancement of technology.
However, in the midst of being dumbfounded, I failed to realize the price we humans have to pay for such high technology until Ms Kwa pointed out how people could take advantage of this technology to do bad. With the gadgets, soft wares and technology we use, we are essentially leaving traces of ourselves on the World Wide Web and everywhere. These traces can help others form a picture of who we are. in this age and era, it is almost impossible to not know anything about anybody. All we have to do is to Google the name of this person or do a blog search. So if information about you can be obtained so easily, then is there still privacy? Can there still be privacy if technology continues to advance at this accelerating speed?

At the speed that technology is advancing, soon it is just going to take over everything. Look at the direction that advancement in technology is going, it is to bring about convenience. And what is convenience today will not be tomorrow. Today, it may be convenient for you to meet up with a friend over dinner for some catching up, but tomorrow, it may be more convenient for you to meet up with your friend over virtual dinner via the internet for some catching up. We have sacrificed our privacy for more convenience, so are we going to sacrifice physical social interaction for more convenience?
Care for a virtual hug? How about a nudge?
MY LAPTOP’S BACK!
November 6, 2009

MY lAPTOP IS DOWN
November 2, 2009
Recently I tweeted about how ironic humans are. How we turn to another piece of technology after a faulty one fails us. And now, I’m put in that spot. My laptop’s motherboard’s not doing me any justice. It went crashing down, and so I’m typing this post on my blakberry. Laptop sent for repair under warranty, thank god. This means it’s going to be a few days before I can upload my doodles. I could use the resources at school, but I feel my thoughts flow better at the comfort of my cozy air-conditioned bedroom.
Nevertheless, I’ll try my best to work within these constraints! Today’s nct lesson kept me thinking! it seems like with technology, we are all made poorer. We are robbed off our privacy.
Birthday Card
November 1, 2009
here is the birthday card design that i promised! this design work was done solely based on my own intention. later in the post, you will see from the salutation that the card was meant for some one dear to me.
i started working project way ahead of time and so had quite a lot of time to doodle around for inspirations. for this project, i didnt use my usual approach of brainstorming for ideas then coming up with as many thumbnails as possible, finally picking the best to work on. instead, i just started doodling and worked around my feelings. and so, this is the “developement”.

my initial intention of the project was to create a card that was unique to the receiver and the sender and also to incorporate my logo and branding into it to make it personal, preferably soemthign hand-made. however, as the project started to developed, i decided to do away with incorporating my branding for aesthetic purposes and also decided to create the card in photoshop instead of handmaking it. i think handmaking it gives it a personal touch however it’s hard to achieve a polished look especially when the handwritten words wont look consistent. the consistency of the font was a big problem for me here, and hence the move of doing it on photoshop.

the colours you see here are not really accurate, and also the polka dots at the back are suppose to pop more than what you see now.
the rationale behind the concept of the card is that, the sender had a nickname, penguin. and so on the birthday of the penguin’s loved one, she sends a fish as a present. hence, the fish with the red bow and the closing with penguin signing off.
the colours would probably, in most designers’ eyes clash, but i feel that the clash in colour makes the card look interesting and i actually love the combination of colours used.
there you have it, my birthday card design!
this is the first thing i drew the moment i picked up my pen, i’m inspired to do something with it!
